Personal/Individual Retreat Days
What is a personal retreat day?
“It is the temporary disengagement from your daily routine to place yourself before God so that you can re-engage your life and work with greater insight, energy and purpose.” ~ Time Away by Ben Campbell Johnson and Paul H. Lang
Kavanna House believes that a personal retreat day is a time of intentionally pulling yourself away from all that distracts you. It is time spent moving towards God, offering your time and attention. We also believe that there are no hard and fast rules, other than being intentional and open to where the Holy Spirit guides your day.
A personal retreat is…
- Space for you to be with God
- Time for rest
- A place where things below the surface can rise
- A chance to focus
- Time for discernment
- A chance to be present
A personal retreat is not…
- A place to focus on others’ needs or desires of/for you
- A place to create ‘to-do’ lists
- Time to catch up on emails or social media
When is it a good time to consider a personal retreat?
- When you desperately feel you need it
- When you need a time of discernment
- When you desire to renew your intimacy with Jesus
- When you feel stuck
- When you want to spark your creativity
- When you have committed to make it a part of your personal life rhythm
What does a personal retreat day ‘look like’ at Kavanna House?
Kavanna House has private rooms available for personal retreats that must be scheduled ahead of time so that we can prepare for your visit. During your retreat, you are encouraged to make use of the dedicated sacred space we call The Studio and the grounds. Kavanna House will provide you with a variety of reflections that can be used to help guide your day, particularly if a personal retreat is a new experience for you.
We encourage you to dress comfortably and to bring your journal and Bible. We discourage you from bringing volumes of materials, books, etc. with you so that you may be open to where God leads you. You may also bring any desired food or snacks as we have a refrigerator and microwave. Kavanna House does have coffee, tea, water and baked goods for your enjoyment. Upon your arrival, we will orient you to the house and to your room. We encourage you to either leave your cell phone in the car to allow you to move through the day without distraction, or to turn it off while in the house.
We believe that we can be “alone together” with God. During your retreat, we will do our best to maintain a quiet, peaceful environment and will not interact with you once you settle in, allowing you to truly be with God without feeling the need to make small talk. To help us maintain this reflective atmosphere, we respectfully ask that you not engage others in conversation. This allows others to also be “alone together” with God. Of course, if you have a need we can meet, please ask . . . quietly.
We will be holding you in prayer as you spend your day with us and our desire is that you have a deep sense of God’s presence. If you have a focused intention for the day, please let us know and we will hold you in prayer around that particular issue, as well.
Spiritual Direction During Your Retreat:
First time retreat guests, who do not currently have a spiritual director, are invited to consider including a complimentary spiritual direction session as part of their day. Returning retreat guests can include a one-hour spiritual direction session as a part of their personal retreat day for an additional $50 fee which is paid directly to the director. Please let us know at the time of scheduling your retreat if you are interested in this so that we can make those arrangements.
