Retreat Boxes

Kavanna House offers a variety of personal retreat boxes which contain unique elements to help you move into a day of reflection and peace.  All of our boxes come with an overview of the practice of visio divina (“sacred seeing”) along with specially curated images chosen around the particular theme of the box.

Ruth Haley Barton says: “Going on retreat is like a boat entering into the lock in order to rise to new heights. There is simply no substitute for this, nothing I could do for myself even approaches what God can do for me in the context of retreat.“

Box Themes

Personal Retreat 101 ~ For those new to the practice of a personal retreat day, this box includes all the essentials to help you get started including an overview of a personal retreat day and journaling basics.  The reflection sheets within this box are focused on the practices of noticing and being present.

Letting Go ~ "Letting go is trusting that you will be held...that although things may not be the way you want them to be, all will be well." This box includes materials to help you consider what you might let go of to create space for the “new” you never even knew you needed.

One Word ~ Based on the book, One Word That Will Change Your Life by Jon Gordon, Dan Britton and Jimmy Page, this box provides information and reflection questions to help you discern what your ‘one word’ will be for the coming year.

Grand Examen ~ The Grand Examen is the process of looking closely at your past year to see what has happened and to notice where you sensed God’s presence with you ... and perhaps where you didn’t. This box includes materials to help you do this by walking you through the process of looking back, looking through, looking forward and looking around.

Preparations For Retreat Day

Kavanna encourages individuals to “retreat”, to take time out to just be with God.  This isn’t a time to catch up on work or even do  Bible study. It is a time to rest, renew and recognize that our relationship with God is not based on what we do or how much we know but just because we are. You can do your retreat in the privacy and comfort of your own home or look for a quiet space away.

During your retreat, we suggest that you set up a quiet, peaceful place to spend your time.  Put your phone on “do not disturb” and let others know that you won’t be available.  Dress in comfortable clothes and surround yourself with the things that help you become aware of the presence of God.  We suggest that you open your retreat box right before you begin your retreat.

Kavanna House believes that a personal retreat day is a time of intentionally pulling yourself away from all that distracts you. It is time spent moving towards God, offering your time and attention. We also believe that there are no hard and fast rules, other than being intentional and open to where the Holy Spirit guides your day.

“It is the temporary disengagement from your daily routine to place yourself before God so that you can re-engage your life and work with greater insight, energy, and purpose.” ~ Time Away by Ben Campbell Johnson and Paul H. Lang
